Family Court Advisor – CAFCASS Chelmsford
Qualififed Social Workers required for Full-time locum posts in the Information and Screening Team (work to first hearing).
Family Court Adviser Role Summary;
The Family Court Adviser role provides advanced social work support to children, families, and courts within family proceedings, ensuring the child’s welfare and safeguarding remain central to all decision-making. The role involves assessing risk, analysing complex cases, advising courts on child protection and welfare concerns, and working directly with children and families to achieve positive outcomes.
Applicants must hold a recognised Social Work qualification and have at least three years post-qualifying experience working with children and families. Strong assessment, communication, negotiation, case management, and IT skills are essential, alongside the ability to work effectively under pressure and manage sensitive, high-conflict situations professionally.
WTFH (Work to First Hearing)/Information and Screening Team (IAS);
Focuses on the initial stage of private law proceedings before the first hearing. FCA’s complete safeguarding checks, assess risk factors, identify welfare concerns and provide early recommendations to help the court make safe decisions for children.
Public Law;
Cases where the Local Authority has intervened due to safeguarding concerns or risk of significant harm to a child. FCA’s act as Children’s Guardians, representing the child’s wishes and best interests throughout care proceedings.
Private Law;
Cases involving disputes between parents or carers regarding child arrangements, such as contact or residence. FCA’s assess welfare concerns, provide safeguarding advice and support families to remain focused on the child’s needs.
CFC (Child Focused Court Model);
A model designed to ensure court proceedings remain centred on the needs, voice and lived experiences of the child. FCA’s work collaboratively with families, professionals, and the judiciary to reduce delay and achieve better outcomes for children through a more child centred approach.
