Job Search Advice

Interviewing may be the most important skill in your job search, as it is the one opportunity the hiring manager has to decide who to select for the role. Your resume helps you get an interview, and reference checks and assessments are used to validate the conclusions of the interviews. However, it is the one-on-one interaction, where you have the opportunity to talk directly to the hiring manager to highlight your skills, obtain information about the role and for the hiring manager to ensure you have the necessary skills and experience to be successful in the position.

First impressions count and how you dress makes a difference. Not all organisations have a strict dress code and may allow casual clothing, however it is best to avoid this for your interview. By avoiding casual clothes, such as jeans etc you are showing your prospective employer that you are professional and taking the interview seriously.

Always ensure that you arrive to your scheduled interview on time or even better aim to be 10 to 15 minutes early. Remember to also take a notebook and pen with you so you are able to remember important points raised and you can refer to your questions you defined previously to ensure you cover everything.

It is natural to feel nervous when attending an interview, however if you are well prepared you should be confident in your ability.  Take a moment to think about the interviewer’s questions and don’t feel pressured to answer immediately, it is better to compose yourself so you can answer the question to the best of your ability. Ensure you listen carefully to the interviewer and answer their question accurately without wandering off topic. If you don’t understand or didn’t hear the question, don’t hesitate to ask for clarification or for the question to be repeated.
