Stoke on Trent City Council are currently recruiting Access to Records Officers for their Childrens Services.

We’re looking for a detail-driven and resilient professional with proven experience in children’s social care to join our team and lead on Subject Access Requests (SARs) with confidence and credibility.
In this pivotal role, you’ll manage the full SAR process end-to-end receiving, logging and coordinating disclosures in line with GDPR, the Data Protection Act 2018 and all statutory guidance.
You’ll bring hands-on experience of working with sensitive children’s case records, including the ability to review historic files, identify third-party and safeguarding information, and apply accurate redactions. A key part of the role involves constructing clear, well-sequenced chronologies that support individuals in understanding their care journey, so strong analytical skills and a solid grasp of children’s social care pathways are essential.
Collaboration will be at the heart of your day-to-day. You’ll work closely with social workers, managers, legal colleagues and data protection leads to ensure every disclosure is lawful, proportionate and handled with empathy. You’ll also maintain comprehensive audit trails, contribute to policy development and support continuous improvement in how we manage access to records.
If you have a background in children’s services, excellent knowledge of GDPR and FOI legislation, and the resilience to work with sensitive, complex histories, this role offers real scope to make a meaningful impact while championing individuals’ rights to understand their past.

Hybrid working – ideally, we would like the applicant to come into the office twice a week

Children’s Social Workers will need at least 3 years’ permanent experience with an English local authority and to be registered with Social Work England, as per DfE rules.
